An official application of the History of Nantes Museum

Discover « The Slave Trade and Slavery », a videoguided tour of the History of Nantes Museum.

The slave trade is part of the history of the City of Nantes. From the 17th to the 19th century it was a key market in Nantes' commercial activities and helped the city to thrive. Today the slave trade and slavery are two of the principle themes presented at the History of Nantes Museum.
11 of the museum's rooms display objects devoted to these subjects. The commentaries contained in this application allow you to explore them in greater depth. This application will help you to look at and interpret the documents. With it you can zoom onto certain important details of a painting or an archive. Navigation photos will help guide you from one room to the next. A menu allows you to select the commentary that interests you. During your tour of the museum the application will help you to understand exactly what role Nantes played in European slave trading. You'll learn how to organize a slave trading expedition, which ship owners and merchants launched this trade and what happened during a slave auction. Finally you'll discover how slaves lived on the plantations.
This videoguided tour lasts about an hour and a half.
