A new kind of bondage arrived on the shores of America long before it was the United States. In the process of wrenching itself free from the grip of the mother country of Britain, an awareness in North America, of what some called “our peculiar institution”, began to rise. It was to trigger a domino effect of events that would lead the country to civil war. Less than a hundred years after winning its freedom from Britain, slavery was the issue that threatened to destroy the newly-formed United States of America.
