***Existing users: For a happy update experience, please read “What's New in this Version” below. :)***

***New users: Thanks for choosing the new OmmWriter Gaia, and welcome to the family!***

A wise man once said: “We are all at the mercy of our wild monkey minds. Incessantly swinging from branch to branch”. With multiple windows and applications all vying for our attention, we have sadly adapted our working habits to that of the computer and not the other way around.

OmmWriter is a humble attempt to recapture what technology has snatched away from us today: our capacity to concentrate.

OmmWriter is a tool that makes writing a pleasure again, allowing users to be alone with their thoughts; to concentrate and to write without distractions. More than a word processor, OmmWriter is a place to get inspired.

The secret to OmmWriter lies in its simplicity and apparent lack of functionality. OmmWriter Gaia pays special attention to audio and visual effects that contribute to the overall writing experience. We have spent a considerable amount of research time and effort in the audio-visual experience to promote and enhance creativity. OmmWriter is the fruit of this investigation with new dynamic backgrounds employing Chroma therapy techniques as well as new sound effects. This version, Gaia, is a reflection of its new soothing sound environments and backgrounds inspired by Earth’s natural landscapes. In particular, the nocturnal background, which relaxes your vision (and probably your mood).

If you are a scriptwriter, blogger, journalist, copywriter, poet or just someone who enjoys writing, welcome back to concentrating.

What others are saying:

“You either love it or you hate it. Some Cult readers loved it so much they voted it as one of the best new applications of last year” – Cult of Mac

“Part word processor, part work of art, OmmWriter is a must for people who journal, blog, or do any kind of writing where creativity and idea-generation is key. Give it a try” – TUAW

“The modern computer experience is amazing for distracting you from work… OmmWriter Dana doesn’t lock you in a dark room until you force the words out, but rather creates a space in your head that allows you to focus on what you want to say” – Appletell

“When I really want to go into a writing hole, I use OmmWriter” – Life hacker

“OmmWriter is my favourite, because it’s so serene and there’s not much to do but write” – Zen Habits

“Where serenity meets school work” – Forbes

App is now unusable (FIXED)

UPDATE: The developer fixed the problem I outlined below - but I’ve since moved on to other apps, so they’ve lost me forever as a customer when they made this really poor decision described below.

Review adjusted.

PREVIOUS REVIEW:
This app is no longer unusable. It’s a paid app that cannot be used in ANY WAY without registering an account. An absolute vioaltion of the Apple App Store rules and of user trust.

This isn’t Netflix or a subscription service of any kind. Apps that gate users that aren't a subscription service in the past would get blocked by Apple during App Store review process because it was considered a violation of Apple’s intended user experience rules. EG: Pay for an app, nothing should block users from using it right away. The only exception to this rule was subscription services or cloud account services. OMMWrite is neither of those (and shouldn’t be.)

I’m guessing the developer got around that rule because it was an update vs a new app - so Apple slid it the update through without much scrutiny.

Regardless - I’m uninstalling and never using this again. Pretty disgusting to take such a great app and destroy it overnight with such a stupid decision.

Still my favorite writing environment

Ommwriter is like my home office.

I have made Ommwriter the place where I dump all my thoughts about any project I’m working on.

Journaling. Writing marketing messages. Emails. Blog posts. Messages to my ex-wife/co-parent. It’s the place I like to disappear to in order to get my work done.

The rest of my computer truly disappears and I feel like it’s a unique place.

I remember how using apps on the original iPhone felt so unique because the UI completely disappears and the phone BECOMES the app.

With Ommwriter, my Mac BECOMES my pleasant little home office, a place for my creativity to feel safe and come out and express itself.

There are many other apps that do something similar to Ommwriter, but I was determined to make Ommwriter my home office.

Wherever I am, I can plug in my headphones, breathe deeply, and then start to write.

There’s little to no UI elements. Just the text.

And that’s how I like it.

In today’s age, the ability to focus and concentrate is what separates the creative and productive from those just “getting by.” Ommwriter made it easy to start writing, which for me personally has always been the biggest hurdle.

I’m glad I made Ommwriter my home office, and grateful that the developers are still paying attention to it.

Forced to create an account (NO LONGER - SEE UPDATE #2)

UPDATE #2:
I’m very pleased to say that the developer has listened to the user base and removed the mandatory account creation. It gives me hope when companies buck the trend to collect more data (or open the door for this data collection), and I’m more than happy to give the program a five-star rating now that they have removed this requirement.

UPDATE #1: They now mention the registration requirement in the “what’s new” release notes, but the reasons they give aren’t great in my opinion. Please, just make the registration optional - I’m not going to make an account for an app I purchased years ago and so the money I originally paid for is otherwise a waste. If you need more income, make a paid upgrade version - it’s so much better than giving up more data in this day and age.

I considered the old version a five-star program for what it was, but the new update appears to force the creation of an account to continue to use the software. These types of tactics really bother me when they're for software I’ve already paid for, so I’m giving it one star until they remove that requirement. The account creation is not even mentioned in the "what’s new" notes. Good grief.

Developer Response ,

Dear OmmWriter user,

We’ve heard you. Some of you expressed your concern about the registration set up in the recently launched Gaia version of OmmWriter.

It was a big surprise for us, because our intention was to create a direct contact with our community of users, and be able to start a creative and inspirational conversation with you. Also, registration is not an uncommon thing to ask for within the world of applications.

But after reading your feedback, we understand that it could be seen as a breach of privacy by some of you. Of course, this was far from our purpose.

This is why we’ve decided to reconsider this feature. We’re removing the registration process from Gaia in the next update, which will be available in the upcoming weeks. So, please keep your eyes open.

We hope you keep enjoying OmmWriter for a very long time.

Best regards,
The OmmWriter Team
