App Description

The West is a treasure of Irish fiction, spoken word, music and art.

'The West Lite' free app includes three chapters from 'The West' app.

Inspired by Eddie Stack’s classic collection of short fiction of the same name,

The West, includes short stories, 60 minutes of spoken word by Stack and traditional Irish music by Martin Hayes & Dennis Cahill.

Linking it all together is artwork by Phillip Morrison, from the home of the stories, County Clare in the West of Ireland.

"Variously fantastic, comic, elegiac and nostalgic, Mr. Stack’s fiction is versatile and engaging ... a vivid, compassionate, authentic voice ... securing (him) a place in the celebrated tradition of his country’s storytelling." New York Times Book Review

Set in the West of Ireland the stories reveal the soul of a community - its hopes, dreams and schemes. Stack evokes life in a series of cinematic prose, portraits of people, places and situations. The stories are smooth, each one remarkably different, but they click together to form a pattern.

"Never sentimental, often funny, always accurate, this is pithy, finely tuned writing of a high order." The Observer

Fiddler Martin Hayes’s music fits Stack’s stories hand in glove—their art is rooted in the soil of the same county. Add to this the rich texture of Dennis Cahill’s guitar and you have spoken word from another realm: Irish words accompanied by Irish music.

"Stack’s gentle delivery and accurate feel for the rhythms of West-of-Ireland conversation (his rendition of two gossiping old biddies is hilarious) make the experience of listening to them a rare pleasure." Irish Herald

This app contains the cream of Irish writing, storytelling, music and art.
