Description

The first widely available mobile multi-touch piano, Pianist has been featured in a number of Apple advertising campaigns and was one of the 'Awesome iOS4 Apps' in an Apple iTunes promotion. Sound On Sound magazine listed Pianist in its pick of the Top 20 iPhone Apps, and T3 Magazine in its Top 100 iPhone Apps. Pianist has also been recommended by media sources such as the Mail On Sunday and Fox News. Pianist is considered so influential that it has now been listed as one of three examples of musical instrument apps in the primary academic reference: "The Grove Dictionary of Musical Instruments".

- Full 88 key piano keyboard sampled from a real piano for maximum authenticity.

- Record and save your compositions for later playback. Overdub as many times as you want, and remove unwanted notes.

- Virtual "Soft" and "Sustain" pedals, and expression depending on where you press the key.

- Optional dual keyboard layout allows you to reach even more keys without the need to scroll. Up to four octaves can be displayed and played at once.

- Stay in time with a completely configurable metronome.

Excellent tool if you accept its limitations

It should come as no surprise to anyone that in trying to shove a grand piano into a roughly 4 inch wide space, something is bound to be sacrificed. That said, I'm initially impressed by this program. For six dollars, amateur and professional alike can block out the next number one hit, including creating a skeleton with chords. This is a giant step up from what I used to have to do, which was carry around a mini tape recorder so that I could hum a few bars when I came up with something I liked. Now, I can tap out a few bars and hear it played back to me with a minimum amount of effort!

All that said, anyone looking to jam on their iPhone may find themselves a little disappointed. You only can fit one octave at a time on the screen, so it can be difficult to play more than a very basic number without having to perform some finger acrobatics. Also, I notice a bit of a lag, so this program is not suitable for creating performance quality music. On the other hand, for $5.99 it's an amazingly fun toy for kids and adults alike, and it opens up a tremendous amount of possibilities for the budding songwriter who finds him or herself with a few minutes of creative time while on the go. I truly recommend this program to anyone interested in playing and composing music. If the publisher can fix the lag issue and add an export feature, I can see this being the next Garageband.

It’s TRULY baby grand in your pocket☆

I’m FLOORED that you updated this today☆ Thank you for caring enough to do so. I know you did an update in the past year, or two, but today’s update shows you really do care about this app. I’ve had this app since my iPhone3G back in 2009, and I’ve also put it on my iPhone4 (Twenty-10), iPhone5 (Twenty-12), and my iPhone6S+ (Twenty-15). I’ve been a student of David L Burge’s Perfect Pitch course since 1998, and I like to use your piano app to test my ear when tones and notes jump out at me in real life☆ I like the accuracy of the touch, even when using 15-key mode. The tone is so realistic for it to be coming from a phone. It really makes me wish I had a stereo iPhone7, but i’m still gonna wait a while since I still have the last of the headphone-jack iPhones.
Thank you so much.

Fun little Sequencer for mobile artists

The Pianist app is one of the better musical programs that I have seen for the Iphone and Ipod Touch. It is very basic and allows you to put together simple tunes on the fly. I just wish that it had a feature for actually seeing your notes after playing so that you can better edit them. Instead you are given the option of erasing last note, last five notes, last ten notes. The ability to scroll across the keyboard is nice considering the size of the Iphone/Ipod Touch's screen. It would be nice if there was an option to make the keys a little smaller so that you can get to those notes that are out of range of the screen. Over all this is a good, simple program for recording and playing piano.
