The magnetic force on a current-carrying wire is perpendicular to both the wire and the magnetic field with direction given by the right hand rule.

Magnetic fields arise from charges, similarly to electric fields, but are different in that the charges must be moving. The strength of the magnetic field depends on the current I in the wire and d, the distance from the wire.

Equation:

B = μ0 * I / (2 * π * d)

where:
I - current
d - distance from the wire
B - strength of the magnetic field produced at distance d
μ0 - constant value μ0 = 4 * π * 10^(-7) [T * m / A] permeability of free space
