However, over time these cultural aspects began to fade.
mastermind JAPAN seeks to rediscover this culture and apply it to contemporary fashion design. Specifically, the brand makes uses of Japanese craftsmanship.
Homma attaches a special significance to the symbol of the skull.
"To me the skull symbolizes a fight until death to fulfill one’s destiny! " he says.
Skulls are a poignant motif in Buddhism and other religions where it is representative of the cyclical pattern of existence and the fact that beauty can be found in both life and death. "The skull stands for impartiality," adds Homma. "Because all living things must eventually die."
