Portuguese has a wide geographical spread. This is as a result of the long voyages made by the Portuguese in th the 15 th and 16 centuries when they ventured far in their caravels and larger ships, and reached lands then unknown to the Europeans. These seafarers went as far west as the Americas and as far east as Australia and Japan. Today, Portuguese is the official language of Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, Portugal—including the Azores and Madeira. It is co-official with other languages in East Timor, Equatorial Guinea and Macau. The total estimate of native speakers of Portuguese is over 210 million.
