Chosen Gives Hopeful Singers, Songwriters, and Their Critics, a Place to Come Together

Posted by Rob Rich on March 30th, 2015
iPhone App - Designed for iPhone, compatible with iPad

If YouTube videos and reality TV shows like The Voice have taught us one thing, it’s that there are a lot of people out there who are anxious to show the world their talents. And if they’ve taught us a second thing, it’s that there’s an almost equally sizable group of people who are anxious to judge those hopefuls. What’s interesting about Chosen is that it actually caters to both of these crowds.

Chosen comes from the mind of David Hyman, and gives you the chance to become a social media star - or to find said star and be able to say you knew them when.

Performers have an impressive set of tools at their disposal. They can record themselves singing their own songs, do a little karaoke, lip sync to popular tunes, or upload their own video from outside of the app. Once it’s ready, they can then tweak the audio and the video with several different effects (be they silly, dramatic, or anything in-between). What’s impressive is that the audio tracks that play in the background when recording from the app will automatically be canceled out to prevent distortion or reverb - in other words you won't have to wear headphones while recording.

Judges, on the other hand, get to try and find those diamonds in the rough. Although their process is more of an assortment of mini-games. In one, they watch three different video clips and try to pick which performer was the most popular (it proves how “in-tune” they are as a judge). Another one presents a similar scenario except they watch a performer’s clip, then two different judges’ videos, and have to decide which judge was ranked the highest.

It’s this combination of talent sharing and gamified critique that make Chosen such a solid contender in a marketplace that’s already got a a few “talent scout” apps in it. Granted, I’m not going anywhere near the Performer side of things (you’d thank me if you’ve ever heard me try to sing before), but I could totally be a Judge.

So whether you want to show the world how you can belt out songs better than the original artists or if you’d prefer to have fun watching other people perform and telling them what you think, Chosen could be worth a look.

N-Fusion and 505's Ember is Totally Going to be the Next Ultima

And he was happy to answer a few questions on his beloved game.

Appy to Have Known You - Lee Hamlet Looks Back on 2 Years at 148Apps

Posted by Lee Hamlet on March 27th, 2015

Being at 148Apps these past 2 years has been an awesome experience that has taught me a great deal, and working with such a great team has been a privilege. Thank you to Rob Rich, and to both Rob LeFebvre and Jeff Scott before him, for helping me to grow as a writer and for giving me the opportunity to write about what I love: playing innovative mobile games and utilising the most revolutionary apps on the most quickly evolving gaming platform that is iOS.

Yes, there are a sea of copycats and awful Tap Tap clones that no one should ever bother with, but every so often iOS games and apps do the unbelievable - and that's what keeps me wading through that sea in search of a genuine pearl. Since it’s so often the independent developers that establish themselves as the David against the free-to-play Goliaths of the world, I'm proud to have worked for a site that puts indie games right up there with the big releases.

I'll be working over at App Trigger from this point on, so feel free to stop by anytime or follow me on Twitter (@El_Hamlet_). Whether you do either of those things or neither, it's been my pleasure to write stuff down for you to read with your eyes and for your brain to compute very soon after. I hope you stick with 148Apps until iPhones cease to exist and we have SIM cards in our heads and every game is Augmented Reality-based. Although, I hope that doesn’t happen for a while yet.

Oh, and I admit I might have been wrong about A Dark Room. I hold my hands up there. My bad.

Hugs and kisses,

Lee

Hands-On With Allstar Heroes - A Promising Casual RPG

Posted by Jennifer Allen on March 27th, 2015

Let’s get this out of the way quickly. Allstar Heroes looks a lot like a certain other recent action RPG release, but it turns out that while it’s not yet available here, Allstar Heroes has been around for much longer than that other title. Now that copyright row is out of the way, I can say that Allstar Heroes seems pretty fun.

It’s not out here yet, with a release date being vaguely hinted at sometime next month, but it’s shaping up to be a fairly solid release.

You gather a team of fighters, then go from stage to stage taking out the enemies in your wake. It’s a simple take on an RPG really, as it can be fairly hands-off if you want. Combat is conducted automatically with you able to cast special attacks as and when the power bar builds up. There’s a campaign mode as well as PvP options, giving you plenty to do.

The fun, as always with these kind of games, stems from developing your team. You can do a lot in terms of helping your team level-up, with equipment playing a valuable role in helping your party out. Fill all the equipment slots on one character and these can be combined to make the character more powerful, starting back at the beginning equipment wise but with a considerable stats boost.

And that’s where Allstar Heroes should keep you interested. Evolving your characters and watching as they steadily develop is always a satisfying thing to see. While it would have been good to be able to manipulate the characters more in battle, it’s the kind of lightweight RPG experience that lends itself well to mobile gaming. You can get a lot done in the space of a few minutes, with the only restriction being having an internet connection available to you.

Given its lengthy release in China (it was released there in February, 2014), Allstar Heroes'US release can't be far off. I’ve got a good feeling that it’s going to be a pretty fun timesink when it does come out. We’ll be sure to keep you in the know.
